After that I'm not responding to this anymore, you guys would have the murder rate in this country sky rocket if you were in charge. This is hillarious to me.

If they are so worried about guns on campus, maybe they need metal detectors and police on duty to search every student as they enter like they do at major events. It's 2 totally different things but if you want that comparison, check em at the door. I'm sure that'll go over well. No one has yet to inform me why this student was searched and the paper about a woman killing her BF didn't prompt a search of the possessions of its author tho. Could it be cuz the author of that one was female and no females have rampaged on college campuses yet??...now that my friend is absurd.

Every time a state has passed a shall-issue concealed carry bill, detractors have forewarned of the streets running red with blood.

None of those tales of doom and gloom have come to pass.

Barber is guilty of one thing, a thought crime. I thought college was where you mind was supposed to 'grow' and 'flower'.

Nope, college is where you're supposed to be indoctrinated and conditioned to follow the herd. You're there to conform to the lowest common denominator.

As for why he can be expelled for having those guns, he's a student. UVA-Wise, VPI, JMU, etc. can only ask a private citizen to leave the campus if found in possession. VCU is the only campus in the state that has a valid prohibition. And VCU is the only campus in the state where you actually NEED that gun 24/7.

Ask Gov. Kaine and his buddies why they didn't push the various college concealed carry bills through the legislature this year. Ask them why they sat on them, instead focusing on feel-good, knee-jerk legislation that pandered to a class of wimpering sheep.

Ask Gov. Kaine why it is that he vetoed SB 476, which would have allowed CHP holders to conceal in places that served alcohol. Ask Gov. Kaine why it is that he signed SB 776 that grants Commonwealth Atty's and their deputys to conceal in the same establishments with no permit and no restriction on drinking.

Barber is guilty of a thought crime. He did nothing, he only dared to pen a fictional story for a class. He was guilty of doing exactly what he was assigned.

Such is the college environment...

Boy, times have certainly changed since I went to high school and college. Back then people had gun racks in the windows of their pick up trucks...it was because they were going hunting after school...to try and shoot a deer. Everybody carried pocket knives. Nobody tried to shoot or stab each other. I don't remember anyone getting expelled for having either one. Now my son can't even carry his bat into the school to take to baseball practice unless it is in an athletic bag, zipped up because the bat could possibly be used as a weapon. We had an occasional bomb threat and got to sit outside for hours...we didn't have "lockdowns"...Anybody else remember those days???

All boils down to the times we are a livin in...the few bad eggs make things tougher on everyone.

I have to say I agree with PVFan If there is a rule against guns on campus and he violated that rule then he should be expelled

In Grundy last year or the year before I can not remember there was a student at one of the schools that had a gun in there can on school property and was expelled for it.

IMHO right or wrong if an area is a gun free zone and you carry a gun into that zone then do not be surprised when you are punished for it if you are caught

A 'gun-free zone' is nothing more than a 'no one to fight back' zone.

The thing is, the gun isn't what prompted the search...it was the writing. Maybe anyone that writes about violence or characters thinking about violence should be searched for guns. Not just one student. Also, if the punishment for possession of guns on campus is expulsion, it should be spelled out in black and white...not left open for interpretation. Like I said earlier...a nation of wussies.

I agree, you have to abide by the rules...I just remember a simpler time when there was no need for them...The worst thing we had to fear when we were at school was a paddling or maybe a wedgy, lol...I hate that kids these days have had to see the things happen like VT and Columbine...I wish they didn't have to worry about all that..they had a lockdown at their school the other day because a police chase that started in town carried over to one of the schools...sometimes I wonder how safe they are when they leave home...

No one to fight back against what? If you're referring to school shootings and having a weapon to kill the shooter with, I doubt that anyone would have enough time (or courage) to get a weapon and go up against a shooter one-on-one. Now I understand that this guy is a veteran and was in Iraq, but the "time" factor still stands (unless you could somehow sprint out to your vehicle, get the weapon, sprint into the school, and kill the shooter without being blown away yourself in the process.)

Also, it wouldn't be a good idea to walk around campus holding a weapon during a school shooting if police are going to be arriving at the place like crazy. The best thing to do, in all honesty, is to get the heck away or find some place to hide. I wish that there was a way to actually combat a shooter without having a gun yourself, but it simply isn't possible for many obvious reasons. And even if you do have guns on campus, what are the chances of you being able to reach the gun and use it effectively?

I don't understand what you would be fighting against.. unless you're hinting at a "Red Dawn" scenario in which we're invaded by another country which is about as likely as anyone wanting or permitting weapons on campus in the first place.
